Five Things Casting Directors Actually Want in a Self-Tape

Five Things Casting Directors Actually Want in a Self-Tape

Every casting season we review hundreds of self-tapes at Activeline. The difference between a callback and a pass is rarely talent โ€” it is preparation. Here are the five things that matter most:

  1. Sound before picture. If we cannot hear you, nothing else matters. Record in a quiet, soft-furnished room.
  2. Eye line near the lens. Not into it, not at the ceiling โ€” just beside it, at a reader you trust.
  3. Frame from the chest up. Give us your stillness as well as your dialogue.
  4. Make one bold choice. One. Not five. We would rather see a specific risk than a safe blur.
  5. Name the files properly. FIRSTNAME_LASTNAME_ROLE. Always.

Break a leg.
